AS/NZS 3000:2018 Wiring Rules will become effective as of the 1st January 2019. These changes will need to be integrated into your business installation practices to ensure compliance with the new edition.

From this date, these rules will become mandatory for all electrical work, with the exception of projects that started before the publication was released.

We expect the regulator to:

  • Increase electrical inspections to ensure all new work is compliant to the new wiring rule requirements
  • Impose on the spot fines for minor non-compliances
  • Issue enforceable improvement notices with a deadline for rectification
  • Issue further referrals to the Licensing Committee

These actions may not only apply to the electrical contractor (QTP) but also to individual licensed workers.

Targeted areas of electrical works may include:

  • The MEN system of outbuildings
  • Mandatory RCD application to all final sub-circuits in domestic installations
  • Mandatory RCD application of increased risk environments where hard wired equipment is installed
  • Mechanical protection of installation wiring in ceiling spaces
  • Testing of electrical work prior to energisation and proof of compliant results
