Call a Master Electrician before turning the power back on after flood damage

Master Electricians Australia has urged Queensland home owners not to add further tragedy to flood damage caused by Cyclone Debbie and to call a Master Electrician before turning on any electrical appliances.

All appliances that have been submerged in flood or storm water need to be tested by a licensed electrician before they are used again.

MEA Queensland State Manager Gary Veenstra said that MEA has been contacted by the State Government and Energy QLD to provide a workforce to assist Queenslanders who have lost power due to Cyclone Debbie.

“It is vital that flood victims contact Master Electricians to arrange for a fully qualified electrician to assist with turning the power back on at their homes,” Mr Veenstra said.

“Queenslanders who have been impacted by Cyclone Debbie have already experienced enough trauma and we don’t want to see lives lost as a result of people plugging in water-damaged appliances and hoping they will be okay.

“If your switchboard or internal electrical fittings have been inundated, ensure they are properly tested by an expert before you use them again.

“Although it will involve a small cost to hire an electrician, that is nothing compared with the emotional cost of losing a loved one in an electrical tragedy.”

Queenslanders can find and book a Master Electrician by visiting the Find a Master Electrician Page on the MEA website.

“Sourcing properly qualified tradespeople will be challenging in many of the flooded areas and that’s why Master Electricians is offering to put home owners in touch with qualified contractors,” Mr Veenstra said.

“Our members are given access to expert industry advice, training and services to assist in maintaining high standards and deliver on promises to customers so please do not take any risks with getting the power back on at your place.”
