A large-scale renovation to the showroom of the southern hemisphere’s largest car dealership and a former employee on a Canadian renovation TV show were among the Master Electricians Australia (MEA) South Queensland Excellence Awards winners announced today.

The coveted Master Electrician of the Year Award went to Peter Matthews of Solar Service Guys, who built his burgeoning business after he was unable to get an apprenticeship in the small NSW country town he grew up in.

Arnold Electrical and Data Installations took out the Commercial Project of the Year Award for its work at the 45,000-square metre showroom at Mercedes Benz’s Autohaus Newstead. Meanwhile Roman Kasjan – whose ambition to become an electrician occurred while working on a renovation program in Toronto – was awarded the Legrand Apprentice of the Year.

Other winners included Electrogroup’s Donna Pickford (Woman in Contracting Award), Electrotek QLD (Residential Project of the Year Award), Whelan Electrical Services (Industrial Project of the Year Award), Stoddart Electrical (Energy Efficiency Project Award) and Ryan Stoddart of Stoddart Electrical (Electrician Tradie of the Year Award).

MEA CEO Malcolm Richards said that South Queensland has an abundance of dedicated and skilled electricians.

“The quality of the South Queensland finalists was possibly the highest that Master Electricians has ever had and I acknowledge all the finalists,” Mr Richards said.

“Master Electricians members set the standard for the entire electrical industry, so today’s winners really are South Queensland’s top sparkies.

“The project awards pay tribute to the exciting and cutting-edge work that is currently taking place in the electrical industry across the commercial, residential and industrial sectors.

“Individual winners have excelled in areas of quality, safety and integrity that are the key attributes of all Master Electricians. All award winners have undertaken impressive work that has benefitted their customers and our entire organisation is incredibly proud of them.”
