Victoria lockdown: What counts as urgent repairs
During Victoria’s 2021 COVID-19 lockdown, only urgent electrical work can be carried out.
All work that is non-urgent should be delayed until after the lockdown has lifted. Ensure work your business is carrying out fits the criteria listed below.
Can repairs be completed during the current COVID-19 restrictions?
Under current restrictions, authorised workers may carry out critical repairs to rental premises for emergency or safety reasons. This means that only urgent repairs can be completed at the moment. All non-urgent repairs should be deferred until after the current restrictions lift.

If an authorised worker attends your property to conduct an urgent repair, you both need to maintain at least 1.5 metres distance, wear face masks, and minimise physical contact.

What counts as an urgent repair?
Urgent repairs must be carried out immediately because the problem make the property unsafe or difficult to live in.
Anything on this list is considered an urgent repair:
- dangerous electrical fault
- an essential service or appliance for hot water, water, cooking, heating, or laundering is not working
- the gas, electricity or water supply is not working
- the property does not meet minimum standards
- a safety-related device, such as a smoke alarm or pool fence, is not working
- any fault or damage in the property that makes it unsafe or insecure, including pests, mould or damp caused by or related to the building structure
- a cooling appliance or service provided by the rental provider is not working
- burst water service
- blocked or broken toilet system
- serious roof leak
- gas leak
- flooding or serious flood damage
- serious storm or fire damage
- an appliance, fitting or fixture that is not working and causes a lot of water to be wasted
- a serious problem with a lift or staircase.
If a repair is not on the list above, it is a non-urgent or general repair.
