Check them or chuck them: Don’t risk water-damaged appliances

Master Electricians Australia (MEA) has  urged flood victims not to take risks with water-damaged appliances, saying people should either check them or chuck them.

With thousands of homes across Australia impacted by floods over the past 12 months, MEA has urged those affected by floodwater to stay safe and have flooded appliances checked before use.

MEA CEO Malcolm Richards said water damaged appliances could represent a serious safety risk if they were plugged in and turned on before they were properly tested.

“We have seen enough devastation in recent days, and we certainly don’t want to see people adding to the by trying to save a few dollars,” Mr Richards said.

“It might appear as though an appliance is still working, but you just shouldn’t take the risk.  Either have them tested by a Master Electrician before you try to reuse them, or just throw them away.

“In other words, when it comes to water-damaged appliances, either check them or chuck them.”

If your property has been inundated and you need to ensure electrical products or supply is safe, MEA can help you find a local, licensed Master Electrician to help. Phone 1300 889 198 or register for assistance here.
