    Western Australia 2021 Excellence Awards Winners

     

    Commercial Project of the Year

    Foster’s Services – Saint John of God Mt. Lawley Hospital Main Switchboard Upgrade

    What stood out about this project was the attention to detail, planning and risk mitigation needed for such an important project. The relationship with all parties, the communication and consultation had this project as a leader in this award.

     

     

    Women in Contracting Award

    Rose Costello – Cozco Electrical Contractors

    Working in challenging conditions in isolated Karatha, Rose is hands on and very involved in all facets of the business. She is extremely well regarded and involved in the inspiring and exciting morphing of the business.

     

     

    Industrial Project of the Year

    S & K Electrical Contracting Pty Ltd – Roy Iron Ore Mine (Overland Conveyor Project)

    The installation of an 8KM Overland Conveyor and integration with existing mining facilities at Australia’s largest iron ore mine saw the S & K Electrical Contracting team deliver all elements for the successful functioning of the entire RM 3 Conveying project.

     

    Energy Efficiency Project of the Year

    AICA Energy Australia Pty Ltd – Murdoch University ClearVue Solar Greenhouse

    An impressive initiative using solar panel glass and microinverters in a greenhouse to provide more economic climate control. The more precise control of temperature improves production yield by 20 to 30% adding to the overall environmental and social importance of the concept as our climate changes.

     

    Residential Project of the Year

    Pure Electrical & Air – Cheviot Place, Dianella

    While officially classified as a renovation, this project was virtually a new build with only the concrete slab and 50% of the original brick walls remaining.  The team were tasked with the complete electrical and air conditioning works, however challenges along the way required a redesign of the entire air-conditioning ducting layout and continual re-wiring throughout the house to suit upgraded building plans.

     

    Apprentice of the Year Award

    Ronnie Dickenson – BME Solutions Pty Ltd

    With a passion for electronics from an early age and a love of mathematics and science, Ronnie has embraced his apprenticeship and loves going to work and being part of projects that help him expand his knowledge and skills.

     

     

    Electrician (Tradie) of the Year

    Alex Macphail – Pure Electrical & Air

    Alex impressed with his quiet and efficient approach to the challenge. Attention to detail, labelling, presentation and how far he progressed in the challenge was excellent. Alex was a standout candidate.

     

    Master Electrician of the Year

    Foster’s Services Pty Ltd, represented by Alex Foster

    There were many standout qualities for this winner, particularly the fact his business runs in a challenging niche market. The business showcased the ability to adapt to various situations, including working closely with frontline services during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the interview it was evident that the business values efficiencies for both internal use and works hand in hand with their clients to drive further efficiencies for their businesses.

    Requiring a unique skillset, the businesses employees’ have been an integral part to the continuity of the business and are encouraged to participate in the development of new technology. With a strong focus on renewables, and a try before you buy attitude, they have recently moved some of their fleet to Hybrid Electric vehicles and one Renault Electric van. The Judging panel were blown away by what this business has achieved and wishes you even more success in the future. Congratulations Foster’s Services!

    Victoria/Tasmania 2021 Excellence Awards Winners

     

    Commercial Project of the Year

    Kuga Electrical – 99.9 kW Solar PV System to St Francis of Assisi, Tarneit

    This project was a standout from all aspects. From design to project management, safety, repeat business and profitability. The two most important aspects of this job were the fact that another 6 schools were won as a result and the fact that the students got the benefits of practical learning about solar and renewable energy as part of the project. (Award accepted on behalf of Kuga Electrical)

    Sally is an awesome candidate who is committed to industry and professional development. She has made an amazing overall contribution to the industry.

     

    Industrial Project of the Year

    Britton Electrical Solutions – DSI International, Automotive R & D Centre

    An outstanding example of the application of prior planning and preparation to ensure the successful outcome of a difficult multi-faceted project. Wayne recognised the project was something he and his team had never done before and sought assistance through the MEA network to pre-plan and carry out the works. Hence a very successful project and outcome was achieved.

    Energy Efficiency Project of the Year

    High Yield Solar (AES Tasmania Pty Ltd) – UniWave 200

    Nathan’s confidence and guts to do a job like this was a clear standout. Renewables are the way of the future, unique project that if successful will lead to more systems. (Award accepted on behalf of High Yield Solar (AES Tasmania Pty Ltd))

     

     

    Residential Project of the Year

    Argus Technologies – Private Residence, Bayside

    The nominated project is a spectacular example of integrated electrical and communication services using quality products and great teamwork installed during very tight COVID restrictions. Advanced IT and technical solutions to drive the home have placed Argus Technologies in a high category of expertise, all electrical contractors can aspire to achieve.

     

    Apprentice of the Year

    Axel Young – Argus Technologies

    A great future electrician here. Organised and focused in the challenge, Axel has learnt a lot and has much to give. A standout performance on the judging day making him a true state champion and solid candidate for nationals. (Award accepted on behalf of Axel Young)

     

    Electrician (Tradie) of the Year

    Jordan Butterss – Argus Technologies

    Commitment to the task was very evident in Jordan’s work. Extremely tidy and well presented, Jordan was very organised in everything he did and wasn’t far from completing the practical activity when time ran out. Based on what I saw during the challenge, a business should be proud to have him working for them. One of the best efforts in the challenge. (Award accepted on behalf of Jordan Butterss)

    Argus Technologies is an Australian owned and operated company with over 15 years’ experience working with Victorian builders. The business focuses on being the first to deliver new technology to the market, supported by a dedicated team of experts in technology, design consultation, project management and system technology.

    Commercial Project of the Year

    CRM Electrical Industries – Mermaid Beach Radiology

    Cameron and his team completed a high-end project to the highest quality within budget and time, ensuring the build was completed and ready for the installation and commissioning of the MRI and CT systems. A private practice stepping out of the shadows of the major operators in this arena has influenced the team to deliver an environment that assists patients with a more safe and calming influence with lighting and scene mood settings.

    Industrial Project of the Year

    AMG Electrical Solutions – Peanut Company of Australia, Kingaroy Blanching Plant Transformer and Main Switchboard Upgrade

    The project required a transformer and MSB upgrade to build its production capacity. This included an upgrade and relocation of the 1500kVA transformer from 100kVA, installation of submains, new switchboard and more. This project is one the team at AMG Electrical Solutions can be very proud of.  Well done Mitchell and team.

     

     

    Energy Efficiency Project of the Year

    AMG Electrical Solutions – Blackbutt Golf Club

    A challenging project which had multiple facets to overcome to deliver the expectations of the customer, club members and community. The design enabled the customer to overcome the energy network constrains and future options for more savings expanding the off grid capacity. Construction was staged to ensure the efficient use of grant funding and customer equity to deliver a final product. This project was wholly and solely designed & built by AMG Electrical Solutions as the local electrical contractor and is hoped to showcase other industries in region what can be achieved with renewable energy.

    CRM Electrical Industries – Currumbin Mountain Home

    Great bespoke project catering for client lifestyle and budget during COVID. Not a run of mill automation, more a low-key install, it accommodated the client’s uniqueness of loving to cook and entertainment in their retirement years.

     

     

    Apprentice of the Year

    Darcy Air & Electrical Services

    Corey’s calm and helpful manner plus great anticipation skills and ability to absorb complex concepts, soon cemented him as an indispensable and popular asset to the Darcy team. Focused and working quietly he achieved well. He will make a good tradesperson in the near future.

     

     

    Electrician (Tradie) of the Year

    Josh Atkinson, Keith Atkinson Electrical

    Electrical DNA runs very strong in this electrician from a family of electricians. Narrowly winning the challenge from another candidate from the same business. Josh was one of a small group who managed to get to the testing phase of the challenge.

     

    Master Electrician of the Year Award

    Haines Electrical Service, represented by David Waugh

    The Judges were astounded by the professionalism of Haines Electrical.  Their customised safety and qualifications accreditation system is extremely impressive, and the company is obviously very focused on safety.

    South Australia/Northern Territory 2021 Excellence Awards Winners

    Commercial Project of the Year

    Electric Results Pty Ltd – Western Hospital Stages 1, 2 and 3

    Electric Results have produced a project in multiple stages to a successful completion with consideration for maintaining the continual operation of the hospital in South Australia. The process included many challenging degrees of power isolation during the redevelopment maintaining critical clinical services to many parts of the hospital in multi-disciplines.

    Mishi Nau – GESA Pty Ltd

    Mishi had little knowledge of bookkeeping, administration or customer relations when she and her husband started the business. She has gone on complete a certificate III and certificate IV in Accounting and Booking and Certificate IV in Business Leadership and Management. She has also completed a 12 month workshop to become eligible to become a provider for NDIS participants and developed business systems to help her and her husband become more organized.

    Industrial Project of the Year

    Modern Innovation – Equine Stable Design

    This facility is located in Kangarilla SA and the installation was carried out in an existing shed and a newly built structure. The project involved automated lighting, flood and security lighting and Skypads. There were 10A power points installed and designated 15A pendant outlets. Some of the machines and equipment needed to be mobile due to the size of the stable frames so pendant outlets were selected for ease and access. 3 phase outlets were installed for the heavier machinery. This project was 3 weeks in total and was completed on time and on budget with no lost time.

    Energy Efficiency Project of the Year

    Northern Renewable Group – Bagala Store, Barunga Northern Territory

    An excellent example of combining solar and storage with monitoring to provide a 40% reduction in energy costs for a food store in a community in remote NT.

    Residential Project of the Year

    Modern Innovation Electrical – Glenside Homestead C. 1946

    Using very good management and safety work processes to overcome issues involved with old house renovations, Modern Innovation Electrical negated any WHS related issues. The project displays a conscientious effort by Angus to deliver electrical solutions to the client to achieve a desired result for all stakeholders.

    Apprentice of the Year

    George Curtis, PEER

    The quality of Peer’s training was evident in this young man who displayed trade skills exceeding some of the tradespersons I saw during the competition. A fine tradesperson in the making who should prove to be a great asset to any business.

     Electrician (Tradie) of the Year Award

    Angus West – Modern Innovation Electrical

    To be successful working for yourself, you need to be a very organised individual and this is the case with Angus who displayed a commitment to safety and marvelous philosophy and approach to doing the job right. As one of the first competitors in this year challenge, he set a great benchmark for those that followed.

    Master Electrician of the Year

    Electric Results Pty Ltd, represented by Troy Smith

    The judges were extremely impressed with Troy’s knowledge of his P & L and business practices. Troy is well known in member circles for his business prowess and very importantly he has mentored many young fellow members in his state and beyond. We were also impressed with his demonstration of a recent building automation system in a local hospital.

    Alland Group Pty Ltd – Ausgrid, Artmarmon

    Fantastic work on such a large project. Boris invests so much into his team and to the full ownership of each project. No surprise that the group has now won 3 projects off the back of this one. The team at Alland Group produced a project with considerable management and thinking “out of the box” to overcome the difficulties on the site.

    Amanda Buckland – Ausbright Electrical Solutions Pty Ltd

    Amanda is the General Manager of Ausbright Electrical Solutions, which primarily services the Department of Defence and Navy vessels. She is passionate about the Navy and providing support to ensure Australian Sovereign Capability requirements are maintained. Judges found her to be a standout and seriously impressive nominee.  She is passionate and articulate and has worked hard with directors to open their eyes to possibilities.

     

    Residential Project of the Year Award

    TPA Electrical Pty Ltd – Paddington Street, Paddington

    This project displayed dedication and excellence from a team of skilled personnel to showcase an electrical project of very high standard, and is an example of smart electrical perfection delivered at a modest level.  Dedicated client consultation has delivered a completed electrical project with desired positive results.

    Apprentice of the Year Award

    Adrian Slade – FROG Electrical Solutions Pty Ltd

    Adrian chose to be an electrical apprentice because he always enjoyed fixing things and doing hands-on work. He gains great satisfaction in learning new skills and how to master them. Adrian displayed some great trade practices that will stand him well in the future. A credit to Frog Electrical who also competed in the Tradie category.

    Electrician (Tradie) of the Year

    Lachlan Bolwell – Paramount Electrical NSW Pty Ltd

    Lachlan has been in the electrical industry for the last 8 years. He is very passionate about adapting to new technologies and being able to deliver this information and product to his clients. During the skills challenge he was quiet, focused and not easily distracted. Being a tall man and working on a switchboard at table height, this business owner produced a very tidy wiring job as he spent the challenge kneeling on the floor.

     Master Electrician of the Year

    McIntosh Electrical Pty Ltd, represented by Jenny McIntosh

    The judges were impressed by McIntosh Electricals’ dedication to energy efficiencies. Their work on solar installations along with their recent work with Schneider Electric on EV charging stations, McIntosh Electrical shows drive towards sustainability in the industry. Developing an e-commerce website to allow customers to purchase electrical products with the cost of installation built in means McIntosh Electrical are adaptive and customer centric. Their genuine passion for their employees, customers and the industry demonstrates a high level of dedication to the trade.

    Linked Group Services has vision, skill and desire. Their passion to design and manufacture their own model of PV support is an indication of their ability. They should be proud of their achievement and are recognised as a leader in this industry.

    Naomi Burke – Horan & Bird

    Naomi is employed at Horan & Bird Energy as the Scheduler and has been with the company for just shy of 6 years. Her role is varied and includes quoting, technical assistance, and customer service.

    Industrial Project of the Year

    Minelec Pty Ltd – Mount Carlton Processing Plant Upgrade

    The Project was located approximately 130 kilometres south-east of the City of Townsville. The scope of works was to deliver the electrical and instrumentation installation works for the Process Plant Upgrade and was approximately 5,500 man hours of work. Well done Minelec team. A very impressive project showing a high level of skills.

    Energy Efficiency Project of the Year

    Linked Group Service – EcoPort Solar Car Port, Orange

    The project brief was to fabricate, supply & install 3 carports incorporating 100Kw of solar plus 3 structures to suit the carport layout provided by Orange City Council and allow for future expansion of the solar. An impressive installation project using Linked Group’s own design and manufactured solar carport product.

    Electrotek QLD Pty Ltd – NDIS Project, Martin Locke Homes

    Innovation and constant review of site challenges relative to the operation of electrical items including voice activated access and control home entry, lighting, to washing machine operation for handicapped or disabled persons has set a new benchmark in the home care residency. A great achievement for a Regional Electrical contractor bringing recognition to all NQ electrical contractors.

    The secret to the challenge was taking the time to do things right instead racing to the finish. Jack followed this approach and achieved more than others who raced and made errors. With time comes experience and with experience comes speed and Jack should be a formidable competitor in future Tradie challenges.

    Electrotek QLD Pty Ltd, represented by David Corkery

    The judges were highly impressed by the work that Electrotek QLD does alongside NDIS in regard to their home automation services for assisted living. Their facility in North Queensland allows them to test new technology before applying it to the market and their work with school based apprentices ensures quality apprentices are coming into the industry. Electrotek QLD is a strong North QLD business and we congratulate both Dave and Sonia for their hard work and devotion to the industry.
