Our National Award Winners

Project of the Year (Under $1 Million)

Electric Results Pty Ltd, Barossa TAFE Digital Efficiency Upgrade (SA/NT)
 When Electric Results took the job to upgrade digital efficiency at Barossa TAFE, they expected a smooth project. But challenges emerged quickly. With the project more than 70km away from their workshop stock storage issues were a major logistical hurdle. They worked to ensure that the TAFE had uninterrupted operations by managing circuits while working across multiple classrooms. After a leading hand left the company, newly qualified tradesman Matt stepped up to successfully complete the project. They achieved optimal lux output in every room while providing substantial cost savings through occupancy sensor control. The classroom solution offers 0-10v dimming and multiple switching options for enhanced flexibility. The project involved replacing 432 lights, with 99 integrated sensors.

Bonnie MacRae, Complex Electrical (CE Group) Pty Ltd (South QLD)
 Bonnie chose to join a business that prioritises progress, change, and strong values in their day-to-day operations. Bonnie’s role involves implementing new business initiatives to various aspects of the company, providing continuous learning opportunities. Over her five and a half years with CE Group, the company has grown from a small industrial contractor to a thriving organization operating across the greater Asia Pacific region. Her responsibilities have evolved to include designing and implementing business initiatives, expanding internationally, and managing the recruitment, onboarding, full employee experience, while maintaining continuous improvement across training for company growth. Additionally, Bonnie has successfully managed the company’s weekly payroll and new systems implementation, which has seen significant growth and expansion in both human and technology resourcing across multiple states and territories.

Clean Energy Project of the Year

Kuga Electrical Pty Ltd, Wagga Wagga Hospital Multi-Storey Carpark, On-Grade Carpark and Solar Rooftop Systems (NSW)

 Installation of solar systems to the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital carport system by Kuga Electrical included work on their multistorey carpark, Docker Street ongrade carpark, and rooftop solar systems for Support Services and Mental Health Buildings. They offered options totalling 818kW and additional maximized options of 904kW. The system features Trina 450W mono-facial panels for rooftops and Trina 500W bifacial panels for carports. Their turnkey solution includes carport structure, PV installation, and rooftop solar PV systems. Overcoming technical challenges, they ensured smooth installation without disrupting hospital operations, prioritising public safety and the reputation of NSW Health.

Joshua Biglin, Foster’s Services Pty Ltd  (WA)

Although he was highly interested in an electrical contracting career during high school Joshua initially pursued a different path, influenced by teachers and peers. Faced with the reality that he would be desk bound on completion of his university degree, he returned to his original dream and became an electrical apprentice. Joshua finds fulfilment in the challenges and opportunities to build valuable skills via his various work projects, team camaraderie and opportunity to collaborate with skilled colleagues at Fosters.

Dylan Syres, JET Electrical and Data Contractors (VIC)

 The mental and physical challenges of being an electrician, the diverse range of work, and variety of tasks that make each day unique make electrical work Dylan’s passion. He constantly strives to excel as a leader, electrician, and role model, setting high standards for himself and inspiring his team. Since becoming qualified, Dylan has served as a leading hand electrician and successfully completed several large projects, further demonstrating his expertise and commitment to his craft.

BLU Electrical Services Pty Ltd, WACA Light Tower Upgrade (WA)

BLU Electrical Services were head contractor for the WACA light tower upgrade after conducting a feasibility study and providing recommendations. The scope involved dismantling, sandblasting, repainting, and installing new lights and switchboards while the venue remained operational. BLU Electrical Services’ execution and coordination ensured minimal disruptions. Their attention to detail resulted in a successful refurbishment, meeting stakeholder requirements and maintaining the smooth functioning of the WACA Ground.

Power-Up Electrical is known for its exceptional service in the commercial maintenance sector. They cater specifically to shopping centres, commercial buildings, and council properties. With a team of 38 dedicated employees, Power Up Electrical delivers high-quality electrical solutions throughout the southeast Queensland region. Their team boasts extensive experience, ensuring fast response times and a proactive approach to service delivery. Their range of services includes commercial reactive maintenance and round-the-clock call-outs, along with preventative maintenance schedules encompassing RCD testing, thermographic inspections, routine testing and inspections, as well as high voltage maintenance.

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville (VIC)

O’Brien Electrical & Plumbing Rowville delivers a comprehensive solution for electrical needs both in residential and commercial sector. They have established themselves as experts in solar PV, battery storage, air conditioning, construction and service. Their unwavering passion for innovation and dedication to excellence is evident in the exceptional value they provide to their clients. They were accorded the O’Brien Business of the Year Award two years in a row for the 2022 and 2023 titles along with other recognition, showcasing their growth and achievements.

RCE Australia understand the challenges involved in managing complex projects with various engineering aspects. Their primary goal is to ensure clients achieve optimal outcomes with minimal resource input. RCE has developed an approach they call ‘turnkey solutions’, which combines all project complexities into a comprehensive package. TW Electrical and HV Services, Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Facility
TW Electrical and HV Services worked on the eight month long, Gurriny Yealamucka Health Services Facility in Yarrabah. The centre was redesigned to acknowledge, respect, and complement the cultural and social environment. Meaning “Good Healing Water” in the language of the Gunggandji people, Gurriny Yealamucka was designed with traditional owners. The project employed local trainees, Indigenous suppliers, and sub-contractors.

Linked Group Services Pty Ltd
Linked Group Services operates out of Mackay but carries out work across the country, having completed projects in most States and Territories. Linked Group Services provides trade services, project management, as well as renewable energy products in the mining, construction, electrical, manufacturing and engineering fields. They provide services in design, drafting, fabrication, blasting, painting, construction, electrical commissioning, and long-term maintenance with full inhouse products and services. These complementary services, all under one roof, give their clients cost effective outcomes, continuity and above all, trust that they are dealing with a company that can deliver turnkey solutions from inception to completion.

 

Project of the Year (Over $1 Million)
Minelec Pty Ltd, Ravenswood Gold Expansion
Because of this expansion Ravenswood Gold Mine is now Queensland’s largest gold mine. The project involved the installation of over 200kms of cables, five switch rooms, 600 lights, and 350 instruments. Nearly 150,000 manhours of labour were required to create a new, highly automated conveying, crushing, screening, and milling circuit. Minelec’s expertise and experience in providing innovative electrical solutions for the mining industry have enabled them to deliver high-quality workmanship and excellent results, contributing to the growth and development of the mining sector in the region.

 

Clean Energy Project of the Year
Horan & Bird, Mackay Christian College 810 KW of Renewables
Horan & Bird installed an 810kw solar and energy storage facility at Mackay Christian College. The school aims to be a leader in sustainability in their community. The project allowed the school to significantly reduce electricity costs and its carbon footprint. The project took about 10 weeks to complete.

Chalmers demonstrates exemplary performance as a construction project manager while seamlessly supporting the service crew. His commitment to safety, utilising SWMS and JSAs, showcases his dedication to efficient risk management.

Project of the Year (Under $1 Million)
Auswide Electricians Gold Coast, Pacific Fair Coffer LED Project
Auswide Electricians Gold Coast accomplished a successful lighting upgrade at Pacific Fair, one of Queensland’s prominent shopping centres. Faced with outdated neon glass lighting, the centre sought to enhance its modern appeal and improve overall illumination. Auswide Electricians skilfully removed the redundant fixtures and replaced them with LED strip lights, integrating the LED coffers into the existing control system. This upgrade not only amplified the lux levels throughout the centre but also revitalised the visual aesthetic of the ceiling feature coffers. The work was conducted outside of business hours over three months. The extensive installation encompassed approx. 1900 mts of LED lighting, elegantly illuminating 114 coffers within the centre. This lighting enhancement has significantly elevated the ambience of the Pacific Fair shopping centre.

Lachlan has contributed to notable projects such as helipad upgrades, off-grid solar installations, and large-scale industrial production sheds.

Voltora Industries prioritises customer satisfaction, punctuality, quality work, cleanliness, and competitive pricing. The company employs over 30 skilled staff members across two states. With expertise in air conditioning, security, data, solar, and general electrical services, Voltora Industries offers comprehensive end-to-end solutions. Located in Brendale and serving Melbourne as well, the company continues to grow while maintaining its commitment to excellence.

S.D.F Electrical, 31 Duncan St Fortitude Valley
Urban Utilities new head office and control centre required a HV substation relocation that would impact the entirety of Fortitude Valley’s Chinatown Mall. Built on top of an existing carpark, the building includes 10 levels of boutique office space that includes the water authority’s new control centre. SDF Electrical was tasked with relocating the HV substation for the building that powers the entire Chinatown Mall with minimal disruption to supply. The building also features completely contactless access for lifts, doors, toilets, soap dispensers and taps. Similarly, all door locks are Bluetooth activated through smartphones.

 

Clean Energy Project of the Year
Goodhew Electrical & Solar, Stuartholme School Solar Program
Goodhew Electrical & Solar was commissioned to design a large-scale solar system for the Stuartholme School. The initial phase involved a comprehensive redesign of the school’s Aquatic Centre shade structures, accommodating a 250kW solar system. This phase generates 1.1 megawatt hours of electricity daily, reducing operational costs and the school’s carbon footprint. The completion of this project provides students with the opportunity to learn about renewable energy in real time. Goodhew Electrical & Solar is continuing to work with the school on the design of Stage Two which will include another 100kW of solar housed across five buildings later this year.

Ariel Albert, M2 Electrical Pty Ltd
Ariel wanted to be a sparky straight after school however was told he would not be able to without having completed a complex math subject. He then achieved his carpentry apprenticeship and soon after joined M2 Electrical as a chippy, before finally for filling his dream and starting his electrical apprenticeship in his late 20s. He took out M2’s Apprentice of The Year Award in 2022. He enjoys the variety of work that being an electrician provides and the need to problem solve on the job. He is known to his peers as being reliable and is someone who is always willing to give anything a go.

In the past year, they recorded zero serious safety incidents and a 10 per cent revenue increase thanks to their focus on staff training and specialisation in insurance work, maintenance, and renewable energy solutions.

MyEnergy Engineering, William Creek Power System
Situated nine hours north of Adelaide, William Creek has long been dependent on road deliveries for essential supplies like food, fuel, and beer. In 2022, the town took a significant step forward by partnering with MyEnergy Engineering to provide a solution for a reliable and sustainable power source to reduce environmental impact and reliance on energy from diesel fuel. The project incorporated various technologies including the Victron Cerbo GX energy management system plus a state-ofthe-art solar power system with a 200 kW array of 330 solar panels and Pylon Technologies US5000 batteries to provide 280 KWh of storage capacity. This sustainable energy solution has brought a new era of self-sufficiency and renewable power to William Creek with 80% of energy now generated from renewable sources.

Corey pursued a career in electrical work because he has a passion for finding solutions and enjoys the challenge of tackling complex issues. He values the camaraderie and teamwork involved in completing a job and takes pride in his workmanship. Although he finds fulfilment in all his projects, Corey considers his work on the ZipTrak blinds in Tonsley and at Underdale High School to be particularly rewarding.

Garry has been in the electrical industry since 1987, gaining experience as a domestic electrician, leading hand on commercial projects, and in counter sales and project quoting. After coming to Australia he transitioned from commercial sites to domestic electrical work and eventually built substations with SAPN before founding GESA Electrical in 2005. Garry is passionate about problem-solving, finding the right solutions for clients, training apprentices, and continually learning in the field. His achievements include learning and adapting his skills from Germany to South Australia and his goal is to support other business owners in their journey from trades person to business owner.

Michael is a second-year apprentice electrician with a passion for working with his hands and a love for the mathematical elements of the trade. He enjoys being challenged with a variety of different work, both in theory and in the field. His impressive skill set has allowed him to work on some major projects, including the CBUS building and a Defence facility in Adelaide. Currently, he is working on the SAHMRI building, and he relishes the opportunity to learn new skills and take on more challenges.

Optimal Gaming is Launceston’s exclusive gaming centre, providing an immersive SimWorks Simulated Racing and Flying experience. When relocating to Launceston CBD, CM & SM Gee Electrical undertook a challenging task. The 150-year-old split tenancy building required a complete electrical demolition, rewiring, and fit-off. This intricate and hazardous work had to be completed to a strict deadline while ensuring uninterrupted power to the other businesses and tenants. Despite the complexities, CM & SM Gee Electrical successfully completed the project, enabling Optimal Gaming to establish its unique gaming hub in the heart of Launceston.

Since its establishment 6yrs ago, PST has experienced exponential growth, now employing 11 professionals. DMS Energy
DMS Energy, a solution-based business, specialises in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and more rudimentary electrical contracting projects. This year, they’ve expanded their workforce skills and undertaken remarkable projects across Tasmania. Staying ahead of new product developments and applying them effectively is a perpetual challenge. They continuously train and consult with manufacturers, ensuring safe and tailored solutions for their clients. With sixteen years of experience, they employed ten full-time staff, including three apprentices and two part-timers, achieving remarkable results despite their modest size. They are based in Spreyton, near Devonport, Tasmania.

 

Clean Energy Project of the Year
DMS Energy, Wandering Trout
The off-grid brewery project posed significant challenges for DMS Energy, as there was no grid power available at the site. DMS Energy required innovative solutions to provide ample hot water for the brewing process and enough electricity for all production stages, including chilling and canning. DMS Energy successfully implemented a co-generation system that combined thermal and photovoltaic energy systems. FROG Electrical Solutions Pty Ltd successfully completed a lighting upgrade project at St Philip’s Church in Church Hill, Sydney. The aim was to enhance the church’s features and provide practical lighting. They replaced old lighting with energy-efficient, programmable solutions. Challenges included preserving the heritage building, access limitations, and custom solutions due to its unique nature. Despite these obstacles, FROG Electrical Solutions delivered high-quality results, demonstrating their technical expertise and commitment to the project’s success.

The TfNSW Electrical Learning Centre in Chullora addresses the critical shortage of electrical workers required for New South Wales’ expanding transportation network. The state-of-the-art facility offers competencybased training and assessment, equipping staff with the knowledge and skill to perform electrical isolations, issue the relevant permits, and carry out the installation and maintenance of electrical infrastructure across the transport network. It aims to provide skilled personnel to support the increased demand for trains and services. The centre utilises a blended approach, including realistic replicas of the electrical operating environment for practical training. This facility plays a vital role in developing the workforce needed to meet the infrastructure requirements and support the growth of transportation in New South Wales.

 

Clean Energy Project of the Year
Kuga Electrical, Wagga Wagga Hospital Multi-Storey Carpark, On-Grade Carpark and Solar Rooftop systems
Installation of solar systems to the Wagga Wagga Base Hospital carport system by Kuga Electrical included work on their multistorey carpark, Docker Street ongrade carpark, and rooftop solar systems for Support Services and Mental Health Buildings. They offered options totalling 818kW and additional maximized options of 904kW. The system features Trina 450W mono-facial panels for rooftops and Trina 500W bifacial panels for carports. Their turnkey solution includes carport structure, PV installation, and rooftop solar PV systems. Overcoming technical challenges, they ensured smooth installation without disrupting hospital operations, prioritising public safety and the reputation of NSW Health.

The QV1 Streetscape at St Georges Terrace transformation featured new garden beds, and a functional eating area. But by night the site became a captivating sight thanks to designed lighting that showcased the building’s architectural beauty. The slow pixel chasing lighting on the east and west walls created a stunning wrap-around effect. It featured highlighted palm trees, planters with in-ground lighting, and illuminated advertisement boards added to the allure. The project garnered significant attention from social media, news outlets, the City of Perth, and the Lord Mayor’s office.

BLU Electrical Services Pty Ltd, WACA Light Tower Upgrade
BLU Electrical Services were head contractor for the WACA light tower upgrade after conducting a feasibility study and providing recommendations. The scope involved dismantling, sandblasting, repainting, and installing new lights and switchboards while the venue remained operational. BLU Electrical Services’ execution and coordination ensured minimal disruptions. Their attention to detail resulted in a successful refurbishment, meeting stakeholder requirements and maintaining the smooth functioning of the WACA Ground.

 

Clean Energy Project of the Year
West State Electrics Pty Ltd, Scott’s Off Grid Farm
Scott’s Off Grid Farm features two independent offgrid systems, totalling 111.72kW using SunPower solar panels, 100kVa of Fronius inverters and 945kWhr GenZ battery storage. The anticipated annual production is over 140,290kWh, ensuring the farm’s self-sufficiency through renewable energy. The team overcame many challenges including the installation of 1.2km of underground AC cable, unique weather conditions and custom-made arrays for livestock safety in a remote location. This project highlights West State Electric’s diverse capability to undertake technically challenging large scale off-grid projects whilst upholding their commitments to proactive design and quality.

Britton Electrical Solutions, 155 Bourke Street
A former Quest apartment block was converted into 63 individually metered apartments. Britton Electrical Solutions worked as the electrical contractor for the conversion along with public light and power installations. The team successfully handled the installation of new main switchboards and six-level group meter panels, overcoming challenges such as coordinating paperwork for the 63 new connections, managing logistics and transport, and adhering to strict power shutdown timeframes. The project showcased their expertise in handling complex electrical conversions and delivering reliable and efficient power solutions.

Kuga Electrical implemented an operations and maintenance contract for the project, ensuring ongoing support and maintenance. A custom roof-mounted inverter station has been designed for efficient energy conversion.
