NSW and Victorian cross border blitz: what inspectors are targeting

Cross border safety blitzConstruction sites on both sides of the NSW-Victorian border can expect increased inspections over coming weeks.

As border travel returns to normal, NSW SafeWork and Victorian WorkSafe inspectors will launch a cross-border blitz of construction in the Albury-Wodonga area.

The blitz will target:

  • Electrical safety
  • Housekeeping
  • Height safety
  • Falling objects
  • Moving plant operations
  • Silica and asbestos controls

There has been an increase in construction activity in the area in recent weeks and inspectors are concerned business’s resources may be stretched thinly.

NSW SafeWork inspectors work closely with NSW Fair Trading inspectors and NSW Building Commissioner officers to share information on businesses and tradespeople delivering poor-quality construction and those who using sub-standard safety practices. Those not meeting standards can expect compliance action to prevent workers being put at risk or consumers getting sub-standard work.

On-the-spot fines of $3,600 for corporations and businesses, and $720 for individuals will be issued where breaches are identified and more those prosecuted of serious face higher fines and imprisonment.
