A tragic incident involving an elevating work platform (EWP) has caused a contractor to lose his life at the North Blackburn Shopping Centre, Victoria. The incident is currently under investigation by WorkSafe. This marks the 39th confirmed workplace fatality in for 2023.

This is the second significant EWP-related incident to occur recently, highlighting the critical importance of safety when using EWPs and prompting WorkSafe Vic to release a safety alert reminding employers about the importance of safe systems of work.

The alert outlines the increased risk to people, operators and passengers being crushed while using an EWP in certain circumstances including:

  • Overhead or adjacent fixed structures present near the EWP operational area, such as roofs, structural beams and pipework.
  • Unstable ground conditions, malfunctioning controls, or operator error causing the platform to move unexpectedly when near to overhead or adjacent fixed structures.
  • Obstacles on the ground near to EWPs which may distract an operator’s attention from overhead risks whilst operating the EWP.

More information on the alert can be found on the WorkSafe Victoria website.

A full guide on the hazards and safety standards of EWPs can be found on the Safe Work Australia website.
