MEA and TasNetworks SAPS and private asset fault agreement

Master Electricians Australia and TasNetworks has reached agreements regarding proposed Stand Alone Power Suppliers and Private Asset Fault changes.

After consultation regarding TasNetwork’s AER Revenue Reset proposal, MEA expressed a number of concerns.

  • That there were plans for TasNetworks to install Stand Alone Power Supplies (SAPS) for new remote connections, or to replace existing infrastructure in remote areas in competition with private contractors.
  • TasNetworks were proposing to repair Private Asset Faults.
  • For SAPS and Private Asset Faults there was a term being used in relation to TasNetworks performing works as a “Provider of Last Resort”, MEA wanted clarity on this definition.

After some meaningful consultation we have clarified some issues and have a pathway forward on others.

Stand Alone Power Suppliers
  • TasNetworks has no sites currently identified for the installation of a regulated SAPS for the 2024-2029 regulatory control period.
  • TasNetworks is not proposing any regulated SAPS expenditure in our regulatory proposal.
  • If SAPS are to be installed on customer installations in the future, it is envisaged that these works would be undertaken under tender by private contractors.
Rectification of Private Asset Faults
  • On the basis that works would only be performed during fault conditions, it gets a customer reconnected to supply in a timely manner, & works can be completed in 30min
  • TasNetworks to develop a list of ‘approved tasks’ for consultation with industry at the upcoming end of October workshop.

MEA looks forward to ongoing constructive engagement with TasNetworks. MEA is the voice of the electrical contracting industry, and advocates for the best interest of all electrical contracting businesses.
