Five reasons electrical contractors referred to licensing committee

Without a licence, your electrical contracting business simply can’t exist.

Having action taken against an electrical licence, or electrical contracting licence can occur for many reasons.

But what are the reasons why an electrical licence committee will take disciplinary action against a licence? And what can you do to make sure it does not happen to your business?

MEA sat down with Queensland’s new Electrical Safety Commissioner Keith McKenzie to ask what businesses need to know.

The five most common reasons an electrical contracting business could face licencing disciplinary action:
  1. Failure to test, or to test in compliance with AS/NZS3000
  2. Failure to implement a safe system of work
  3. Failure to provide adequate supervision
  4. A young worker or apprentice impacted by a safety incident
  5. Working near energised equipment.
How do electrical contractors stay compliant?
  • All electrical contracting business must have a safe system of work, and it should be implemented from the boss down to the through to the apprentice.
  • Every business needs to ensure all workers are competent and the business must have evidence that they are.
  • Regular toolbox meeting with workers are important to make sure your workers are up to date and understand their responsibilities.
  • Ensure your business’s Qualified Technical Person has the relevant knowledge and skill set of the work being undertaken.
  • Make sure you are providing adequate supervision to the young workers and apprentices that you employ.
  • Make sure you isolate upstream to prevent working live or working on or near energised parts.
  • Undertake regular audits of the business to make sure you are working to the highest electrical safety standards.
