Master Electricians Australia Bids Farewell to Founding CEO, Malcolm Richards

Today marks the end of an era, as we announce Malcolm Richard’s departure from Master Electricians Australia after an incredible 17 years as CEO.

Mr. Richards, who assumed the role in 2006, has been instrumental in guiding MEA through unparalleled growth, transforming it from a state-based organisation into a national entity. Under his leadership, MEA has emerged as a pivotal voice in Australia’s electrical industry, advocating for critical issues affecting members and customers.

Peter Matthews, MEA President, paid tribute to Mr. Richards’ legacy of unwavering leadership.

“Thanks to his steadfast guidance and hard work, Master Electricians Australia is now the most recognised brand among electrical contracting associations, with genuine influence over industry policy nationwide,” Matthews said.
“On behalf of the MEA Board, I extend our gratitude to Malcolm for his years of dedicated leadership.”

During Mr. Richards’ tenure, MEA has been a prominent advocate on crucial issues, including the successful safety switch campaign, involvement in the roof insulation affair, and – more recently – ensuring contractors retain affordable access to Standards.

The association has also experienced substantial membership growth and financial success, culminating in the establishment of its headquarters in Brisbane and investments in initiatives supporting members in safety, training, and other key aspects of their businesses.

In recent years, Mr. Richards has represented MEA members on a number of state and national Boards and industry forums, and has devoted significant effort to visiting members across each state.

Reflecting on his departure, Malcolm Richards shared his hopes for the future.

“I look forward to witnessing the next chapter of growth in the MEA journey. The team is truly incredible, with a portfolio of innovative and exciting projects in the pipeline,” Richards said.
“I am enthusiastic about seeing fresh leadership guide the organisation through this exciting period of change.”

With Malcolm’s departure, the MEA Board will initiate a national search for a new CEO capable of building upon the organisation’s existing successes and propelling it to the next level of service for members and the wider industry.
