Nation’s top electrical project keeps the sports fans happy
Keeping the lights on at the WACA while keeping sports fans happy has been recognised as one of the leading electrical industry projects of the year.
BLU Electrical Services’ role as head contractor in the upgrade of the WACA light tower has been awarded National Project of the Year (over $1 million) in the annual Master Electricians Australia Excellence Awards.
Other major 2023 award winners include a project to upgrade digital efficiency at a South Australian TAFE College, a major business power up by this year’s Women In Contracting winner, and an apprentice who realised he would be happier on the tools than behind a desk.
Master Electricians Australia CEO Malcolm Richards said winners across multiple categories in this year’s Excellence Awards showed the incredible range of skills across the ranks of Master Electricians.
“These awards have shown that there are some extraordinarily talented Master Electricians doing very creative and innovative things while embracing our values of quality, safety and integrity,” Mr Richards said.
“The finalists came from electrical businesses across the country, and hundreds of electrical contractors throughout Australia contested the respective state-level awards.
“Our winners have shown incredible tenacity, perseverance and talent and represent the best that the industry has to offer.’’
BLU Electrical Services needed to ensure the West Australian Cricket Ground stayed operational during the project to upgrade its famous light tower. This involved dismantling, sandblasting, and repainting the tower, and installing new lights and switchboards.
Upgrading digital efficiency at Barossa TAFE, as well as the obstacles that can often occur during complex projects, won Electrical Results Pty Ltd of South Australia the Project of the Year (Under $1 million).
The team worked hard to ensure the TAFE College experienced minimal disruptions by managing circuits while working across multiple classrooms. After a leading hand left the company, newly qualified tradesman Matt stepped up to successfully complete the project. They achieved optimal lux output in every room while providing substantial cost savings through occupancy sensor control.
This year’s Women In Contracting Award winner is Bonnie MacRae, from Complex Electrical (CE Group) in South Queensland. Bonnie is responsible for driving new business in a company that has grown from a small industrial contractor to a thriving organisation operating across Asia Pacific in the five and a half years since Bonnie joined the Group.
West Australian apprentice Joshua Biglin, employed by commercial electrical and communications solutions provider Foster’s Services, has found the decision he made at university that sitting behind a desk was not for him particularly rewarding. Joshua has been named year’s National Master Electricians Australia Apprentice of the Year (First and Second Year).
Victoria-based RCE Australia won the ultimate national accolade for the industry with the title of Master Electrician of the Year.
