QLD: Rising number of shocks to unsupervised apprentices

A supervised female apprenticeMEA Field Support Advisors are noticing an increasing number of apprentices receiving electric shocks. Recent site visits have noted that many supervisors and apprentices are seemingly unaware of their obligations and responsibilities.

  1. Supervisors must only supervise electrical work within the scope of their work licence.
  2. Apprentices must not be supervised by other apprentices or trades assistants.
  3. Apprentices can only do work relevant to their competency levels.
  4. Supervisors and Apprentices must be aware of the different levels of supervision (direct, general, broad), and when each is required.
  5. Supervisors must always be available to apprentices.
  6. Not all tradespeople are suited to supervisory roles. Ensure the right person is supervising apprentices.

If you have questions in regard to Apprentice Supervision or employing an apprentice, please call the MEA Hotline on 1300 889 198.

Worksafe Qld also has some great information which will help you get up to date with your obligations and responsibilities.
