Key Messages and Stats

As of 28 September 2023, Australia has seen a decrease in workplace fatalities, with 113 deaths reported compared to 133 in 2022. This reduction highlights the effectiveness of initiatives like National Safe Work Month in promoting workplace safety.

The construction sector has experienced a worrisome increase in fatalities. As of September 28, 2023, there have been 26 fatalities, reflecting a 52.9% rise from the previous year. This surge emphasises the urgency for targeted safety interventions and awareness campaigns in this industry.

In 2021-2022 financial year, there were 130,195 serious claims, highlighting ongoing workplace risks. Technicians and trades workers made up 17% of claims, with the construction industry responsible for 12%.

Workplace safety prevents injuries and illnesses, benefiting the Australian economy by an additional $28.6 billion annually, highlighting the value of investing in it.

As we observe National Safe Work Month, let’s celebrate progress while addressing areas needing more attention. Stay informed and proactive for a safer, more productive work environment for all Australians.
