Registrations are now open for a mock trial event, part of the Northern Territory’s National Safe Work Month celebrations.

The trial revolves around a fictitious case where a young worker faced continuous bullying, harassment, and inappropriate behavior from her manager, culminating in a tragic outcome. This event offers attendees a chance to understand how alleged offences are prosecuted under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. It also sheds light on the legal responsibilities concerning managing psychosocial hazards in workplaces, a regulation effective from 1 July 2023 in the Northern Territory. The trial is scheduled for 1.00pm on 31 October 2023 at the Darwin Supreme Court Building. Attendance is free, but prior registration is mandatory.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has issued an updated safety recall for LG Energy Solution Australia’s ESS Home Energy Storage System Batteries.

This recall expands to include more batteries that may overheat and ignite, causing property damage. All households with a solar storage system need to urgently check if the system has a recalled LG battery installed and should switch off affected batteries immediately, the ACCC has warned.

The Darwin local court has imposed a hefty fine of $487,500 on OM (Manganese) Ltd, following the tragic death of a 59-year-old Mine Superintendent at Bootu Creek Mine in 2019.

An injured worker who failed to disclose his return to full-time employment will have to fully repay more than $121,622 in workers compensation.

Adrian Marion fraudulently obtained payments and falsely claimed stress-related injury compensation while working full-time elsewhere. He received a 12-month Community Corrections Order, was ordered to repay $26,622, and had undeclared earnings nearing $100,000 by March 2022. WorkSafe stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the workers compensation scheme.

Melbourne Truss Pty Ltd, a timber truss manufacturer, has been fined $200,000 for unsafe work practices that resulted in a fatal incident at a Point Cook construction site.

During the truss unloading, a bundle of trusses collided with a steel structure, resulting in the death of an assistant worker. The court ruled that proper safety measures could have prevented the incident. WorkSafe’s Executive Director, Dr. Narelle Beer, stressed the importance of crane safety, stating that such incidents are avoidable.
