Callala Bay incident: A reminder for electrical safety

A 53-year-old man has been found unresponsive under a house on Lackersteen St. Despite immediate medical attention, he was declared dead at the scene. Preliminary reports suggest he might have been an electrician working on the property. While the police and SafeWork NSW continue their investigations, the incident stands as a poignant reminder on the importance of safety.

Best practices: Ensuring safety when on site

Electrical risks are multifaceted. They range from direct threats like electric shocks and burns to indirect hazards such as fires caused by electrical faults. The environment plays a significant role in amplifying these risks. Working outdoors, especially in wet conditions, can jeopardize equipment, making it prone to damage. Similarly, confined spaces with earthed metalwork, like tanks, can escalate the risk of electrical shocks. Recognising these risks is the first step towards mitigating them.

Safety reminders:

  • Regular equipment inspection:
Always check your tools and equipment for signs of wear or damage before starting a job. Damaged equipment can pose significant risks.
  • Use RCDs (Residual Current Devices):
Ensure that RCDs, also known as safety switches, are installed and regularly tested. They can quickly shut off the electrical supply if a fault is detected, preventing potential injuries.
  • Stay updated on safety protocols:
Continuously update your knowledge on the latest safety protocols and guidelines. Regular training can help you stay informed about the best practices in the industry.
  • Avoid wet conditions:
Electricity and water are a dangerous combination. Always ensure your work environment is dry, and avoid using electrical equipment in damp or wet conditions unless it’s specifically designed for it.
  • Only licensed work:
Ensure that only licensed electricians undertake electrical tasks. Having the right qualifications means being equipped with the knowledge to handle the complexities and risks.
  • Maintain safe distances:
When working near power lines or other electrical sources, always maintain a safe distance. Be aware of your surroundings and use barriers or warning signs to alert others of potential hazards.

As investigations continue, it’s crucial to ensure all businesses are operating with the correct safety measures. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased worker during this difficult time. Further information on this incident will be made available when investigations have concluded.
